Mike Bacon – Artist, potter and wood carver

Mike trained as a potter at the Sheffield College.

His pots are hand built using a variety of techniques - coils, slabs and pinching.

Even though he uses a stoneware clay, they are fired to earthenware temperatures only, so that the colour is better for decorating with oxides rather than glazes. The pots are treated on the outsides with either a water resistant oil, or acrylic gloss medium, but they are porous.

Mike knows that his work resembles Pre-Columbian and ancient Greek pots, but they are not imitations, The techniques he uses are quite different, and the designs are quite spontaneous. Mike also makes painted earthenware pots, and glazed stoneware.

Mike enjoys the challenge of wood carving on bamboo and other difficult woods.

He is also and accomplished watercolourist, who delights in depicting water in mountain and moorland landscapes.
